Chasing

Driving east
Chasing moonrise
Eclipsed super-moon

Terrible video
Blurry photographs
Breathtaking experience

I asked Leland to go with me on a drive on the 101 heading East to catch the moonrise… We were late… And yet I was so excited to go!

He decided he’d drive because he dislikes being asked to be the photographer… And the payoff isn’t great… The videos, and photographs can’t fully capture the experience. However, it’s the best we can do to share our excitement with others!

Just like words, they can’t fully communicate what we’re experiencing inside ourselves with someone who’s having their own experience which is outside of our own. We have to agree to meet on the same plane otherwise we miscommunicate. The worst part is the person speaking might assume their message has been understood, when it’s actually only been verbalized.

Leland reminded me that contextualizing an experience is very important when trying to share with an external audience. He learned the lesson from a 98 year old mentor. He would pick up Lil Baker from the Los Angeles Jewish Home on Victory & Wilbur to drive together to Sage sessions. She gave him valuable feedback on the drive back one day after witnessing his presentation to the group. “You didn’t provide context. You just started, and no one could follow because they were disoriented.”

Leland shared he hasn’t understood why I’m asking for money for Laetitia… All he knows is I want her to have money, but he doesn't understand why from where he sits... And he's not going to do that work... We have to deliver it. We’re lacking context. He seems to believe we need to share Laetitia’s context for people to be able to understand:

  • Why her?

  • Why now?

  • Why us?

The worst part for me is getting over the fact that Leland is correct. It’s so obvious once you see context is missing!
Luckily, Laetitia has written about this already! She posted the following message:

”Hello!! I am trying to raise money to relocate to Japan for a job opportunity. This will change my life and my family's financial situation significantly
when I first interviewed for the job I had a transcription work from home job that was paying okay - however, with the introduction of AI there are not as much files for me to transcribe, so I am not able to save any money towards my relocation. I need a plane ticket, visa, rent in Tokyo, food and travelling expenses within Japan (train tickets) for the first month. I have already asked them to move my start date twice (I need to be there by 15th November and start working 1 December. Any amount helps greatly! Thank you!!!"

Would you like to donate? Here’s the link: https://gofund.me/40ccdcfc

When will I stop asking for donations? I’m not sure…

Is the fundraiser the only reason I’m writing… Not really… I’ve been sitting with the idea of communicating to “my people”, and it’s much easier to get back “on the horse” when I can support another.

Thanks for sticking around!
