Life Updates:
Continuing with the idea of: "Life is an art, and we are the artists. My life is my art".
Artists actually pay a price for being artists. They’re outside of the norm, mainstream, or the collective flow. Often they’re misunderstood by peers, contemporaries because what they’re envisioning is so far outside what’s considered “normal” in that place at that time.
As I wrote to a friend, reworded for clarity here:
“Thank you for informing me about “cool” phrases people my age and older use expecting that I will understand them... I don’t… And when I ask what they mean, they can't explain it, they just know the surface. They lack the full understanding required to be able to bring lucidity to something most take for granted.
It’s another feature in the collective of course... If you're questioning things everyone seems to be doing, it’s dangerous. It makes you stand out, marking you as a weird individual.”
Oh well, I’ve been aware I’m weird since 1986. That’s when my family moved from Quetzaltenango to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Everything I thought I knew about the world went through a deep revision. Discovering people do things differently in different places! Getting my eyesight corrected for the first time in my life! Seeing clearly what had always been a blur. Learning English as a second language! Recognizing some phrases can’t be translated appropriately!
Words are so limited when describing an internal experience. And yet, it’s the only way, so we keep trying.
Do you consider your life your art?
