Rooting
Tonight we celebrated Leland’s 81st. birthday a day early with fine dining with a couple who have been long term friends.
As we drove on Cahuenga Blvd. to get to Melrose Ave. from the 101 freeway, I couldn’t help but be surprised at the many new, fancy, multi-purpose buildings erected in the area seemingly overnight.
I used to drive through and around this area quite a bit 20 years ago. For a time, I lived, and studied in the East Hollywood area and drove to clients in the westside, mostly Venice, Santa Monica, and Malibu. Today, I suddenly realized I am no longer connected to this area. I felt like a tourist, visiting the sights.
I’ve lived in the San Fernando valley since 2006. This is the house I’ve spent the most time in my life. The funny thing is that I hadn’t allowed myself to fully feel at home until the last few years I’ve been here.
There was so much internal struggle, striving, and strenuous activity in my life before, I didn’t have the space to fully take in, appreciate, and enjoy my privileged experience of living in our home. I had just been marking time.
I’m grateful to have allowed myself to slow down, take notice, and fully appreciate where I am rooted.
Do you feel rooted where you live?
I’m very happy for you! As we age it’s wonderful to be able to be comfortable with who we are and what we’ve accomplished.
